Walmart recalls 850,000 water bottles after 2 people suffer permanent vision loss from 'forcefully ejected' lids
The retailer has received three reports of consumers who were “injured when struck in the face” after opening the 64-ounce Ozark Trail stainless steel bottles.
Walmart has recalled approximately 850,000 Ozark Trail water bottles after multiple customers reported being struck in the face by the screw cap lids when opening them, including two who suffered permanent vision loss, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Thursday.
According to the CPSC, the lids on the 64-ounce stainless steel insulated water bottles “can forcefully eject, posing serious impact and laceration hazards when a consumer attempts to open the capped bottles after food, carbonated beverages or perishable beverages, such as juice or milk, are stored inside over time.”
Walmart has received “three reports of consumers who were injured when struck in the face by a lid forcefully ejected from these bottles upon opening,” the commission said, adding that two of them “suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye.”
The silver bottles, which were manufactured in China, have a black lid and the Ozark Trail logo on the side and bear the model number 83-662 on their packaging. They have been sold exclusively in Walmart stores nationwide since 2017 for about $15.
There are more than 70 product, food and drug recalls, including the Ozark Trail water bottles, currently listed on Walmart’s website.
Consumers are urged to stop using the bottles immediately and contact or bring the bottle to their nearest Walmart store for a full refund.
