Iran's armed forces said on Saturday they had shot down a modern Israeli fighter jet during Israeli airstrikes.

An F-35 fighter jet was brought down in the west of the country, a state broadcaster reported.

The pilot of the fighter jet ejected himself but his fate is currently unknown and is being investigated, according to the report.

There was no immediate confirmation or denial of the incident from Israel.

Iran previously said it shot down several fighter jets during Israeli strikes on Friday. The Israeli military initially denied the reports.

Israel launched an attack on Iranian nuclear sites, military leaders and top scientists early on Friday, which Iran has responded to with waves of retaliatory ballistic missile and drone attacks.

Both sides have reported casualties, but neither appears willing to de-escalate the conflict despite growing international pressure.
