First came the sandwiches, then the cookies. Now, nachos are the newest footlong offering.

Subway's latest menu item is crunchy, cheesy and 12 inches: Doritos Footlong Nachos. The new addition is a limited-time option and combine the chips people know with the Subway toppings fans love.

The $5 footlong snack, available starting Thursday, April 3, pours out a bag of Doritos Nacho Cheese chips. The chips are topped with cheddar cheese sauce and shredded Monterey cheddar cheese, chopped tomatoes, onions, pickled jalapeño slices and a drizzle of the sandwich spot’s Baja chipotle sauce. Customers looking for a punch of protein can add rotisserie-style chicken or steak at no additional cost or can pay extra for a scoop of smashed avocado.

PEOPLE got early access to the 12-in. snack and were pleasantly surprised by the item. The chips stayed crunchy and the toppings were fresh because they are stacked for each customer as they order. Testers preferred the rotisserie-style chicken to the steak because the former topping crisped up in the oven and provided a nice textural contrast to the gooey cheese sauce.

Unsuspecting testers thought the nachos came from Taco Bell (considering the Mexican-inspired snack and that Taco Bell serves other Doritos items, like the Doritos Locos Tacos ) but the distinct Subway sauce made the item recognizable. The one complaint was that the footlong promise made some testers expect a 12-in. chip but were disappointed that it was just the usual Doritos just served on a 12-in. plate.

The nachos join a lineup of other long snacks including the footlong cookies, Cinnabon churros, Auntie Anne's pretzels and meat and cheese wraps called Dippers. Subway released another limited-time treat, the footlong Oreo cookie, earlier this year but it is no longer available.

Reward members can celebrate the new menu items on Thursday, April 10, with a freebie. Customers can try the nachos for free with the purchase of any footlong sub. The offer will be available online or on the Subway app. Reward members can also redeem the deal in-stores when using the phone number associated with the account.

Rumors swirled about the cheesy menu item back in December 2024.

Popular food blogger @snackolator posted on Dec. 11 that Subway was testing and will soon be serving Doritos-based nachos.

"Subway is getting wild with the footlong menu with Doritos Footlong Nachos!" the blogger wrote on Instagram, explaining that the item was “being tested in a number of stores around the country.”

At the time, PEOPLE reached out to both Subway and Frito-Lay for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
