Michael Madsen Lost Son Tragically Before His Sudden Death
Michael Madsen, known for his tough-guy roles in films like Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill, died July 3 at the age of 67. The actor’s cause of death was cardiac arrest, just two years after the devastating loss of his eldest son, Hudson, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In January 2022, Hudson Madsen, a U.S. Army sergeant, died by suicide on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. He was 26.
Born in 1995 and raised in Los Angeles, Hudson followed a path of service, enlisting in the Army and eventually being stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. He completed a deployment to Afghanistan and built a life with his wife, Carlie, whom he married in 2017.
Following Hudson’s death, Carlie paid tribute to him on Instagram, writing in her bio: “Hudson Lee 05.20.1995–01.23.2022 I love you more.” The simple message offered a glimpse into the depth of their bond.
In a statement to the Los Angeles Times, Madsen expressed his heartbreak, sharing that the last text message he received from his son simply read, “I love you, dad.”
“He had typical life challenges that people have with finances, but he wanted a family,” Michael Madsen said to the Los Angeles Times. “He was looking towards his future, so it's mind-blowing. I just can’t grasp what happened.”
In a statement to Metro, his family said, "We are heartbroken and overwhelmed with grief and pain at the loss of Hudson. His memory and light will be remembered by all who knew and loved him."
The tragedy took a toll on Madsen’s personal life. In September 2024, after nearly three decades of marriage, he filed for divorce from his wife, DeAnna. According to legal documents obtained by People, Madsen alleged that her behavior contributed to their son’s struggles.
Madsen’s death came as a surprise to many. The loss of his son certainly cast a long shadow over his final years. Despite his tough on-screen persona, the actor carried immense grief behind the scenes.
