The biggest night in television is almost here.

After all, the 2025 Emmy Award nominations were announced by Harvey Guillén and Brenda Song on July 15, with well-deserved TV shows like Severance and The Studio leading the pack with 27 and 23, respectively.

Meanwhile, other titles like The Last of Us and The Pitt earned several expected nods, which means they will be facing off in multiple categories at the 77th annual ceremony, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Pedro Pascal and Noah Wyle).

But there were some shows that raised eyebrows, both for being included and being absent in this year’s lineup. For instance, despite earning commercial success, The Handmaid's Tale's final season was shut out of all the categories. Although Squid Game made history by being the first non-English series to be nominated in the Outstanding Drama Series category in 2022, the second season of the Netflix show didn't seem to garner the same buzz.

It’s an exciting day for others, however, like Kristen Bell, who was nominated for the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category for Nobody Wants This. The Netflix series also joined the stacked nominees in the Outstanding Comedy Series category.

As some celebrate unexpected nods, The Bear is entering its fourth year of shining in the comedy series categories. In fact, last year, the series starring Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri broke the record for most nominations in a single year with 23, which was previously held by 30 Rock with 22 nods in 2009.

Jeremy—who earned Best Actor in a Comedy Series in 2024 and 2023 for his role as Chef Carmy—emphasized that the series changed his life. After all, he's nominated in the same category this year, too.

“It has instilled a faith that change is possible, if you are able to reach out, you are never really truly actually alone,” he said in his acceptance speech last year. “My beautiful cast, I love you forever. I love to work with you, I want us to be in each other’s lives forever, I love you so dearly.”

As for when viewers can see who takes home gold? Tune into the 2025 Emmy Awards on September 15 on CBS.

The Handmaid’s Tale concluded in May after six seasons with an explosive series finale, though the final batch of episodes ultimately didn’t receive any nominations. It’s a surprising move since the show has been nominated for 77 Emmys across its run and earned 15 Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series.

SURPRISE: Martin Scorsese

Surviving the frigid Canadian winter through mutiny and cannibalism wasn’t enough for Yellowjackets to earn any nods this year.

The Apple TV+ series, starring Seth Rogen and Kathryn Hahn, earned critical acclaim following its release, and it proved its worth in gold after outperforming with 23 nominations. SURPRISE: Harrison Ford

It’s been a wickedly great year for Bowen Yang, who became the most-nominated Asian male performer in Emmys history with four nods after his Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category for Saturday Night Live. (He was nominated in the category in 2024, 2022 and 2021.)

The Wicked actor is also the only other actor to receive a nod for the sketch comedy, with Kenan Thompson earning nominations six times.

SNUB: Squid Game

Despite coming in hot at the 2022 Emmy Awards with 14 nominations—including Best Drama, the first non-English series to do so—the Netflix series was shut out of all categories for its second season.
