'Big Brother 27' Reveals Hotel Mystery Theme and 'Mystery Houseguest' Premiere Twist
'Big Brother 27' Reveals Hotel Mystery Theme and 'Mystery Houseguest' Premiere Twist originally appeared on Parade.
For 25 years, Big Brother has primarily touted one phrase: "Expect the unexpected." And the fans and houseguests alike will get a major dose of the unexpected in the newly announced mystery theme of the upcoming Season 27, including a house decked out to resemble a secret-filled hotel, and the twist-filled July 10 premiere, including the surprising addition of a "Mystery Houseguest."
As revealed by CBS today, Big Brother 27 will operate under the theme "A Summer of Mystery." The new group of houseguests will live inside the "enigmatic Hotel Mystère," a place where secrets lurk behind every door and nothing is as it seems. And, while the players are getting acclimated to their new surroundings and competition, they'll be hit with the season's first batch of twists in the opening. According to the network, the 90-minute premiere will include "a masked visitor, a secret accomplice and the shocking arrival of a 'Mystery Houseguest' whose identity will remain under wraps … at least for now."
While purposely vague, the idea of introducing these extra parties prompts rampant speculation. Will the "masked visitor" and their accomplice become a season-long antagonist, much like we saw with "Ainsley," the AI character who served as the houseguests' primary foil throughout last summer's Big Brother 26? Will the mystery houseguest introduced be a former player, like we saw with Paul Abrahamian in Big Brother 19? Will it be a celebrity or reality TV star, one of whom we saw back in Season 25 with Survivor legend Cirie Fields? With many anticipating the cast being revealed early next week, the hope is that we'll be able to get a bit more information about who this wildcard player will be.

Along with the announcement of the theme and premiere twists, CBS also released photos of the Big Brother 27 house. As per usual, the show went all out in transforming the interior for the new houseguests, ensuring no two houses are ever alike. Indeed, this season's "Hotel Mystère" is filled with concealed secrets, including hidden passageways and a wall full of keys, as well as "clues that might reveal themselves later in the game." Some of the highlights of the Big Brother 27 house include:
–Living Room Chess Guardians: Towering 22-foot walls and a balcony lined with giant plaster chess pieces (bishop, queen, king, knight) watch over the house, adding a regal and strategic flair.
–Attic Bedroom of Oddities: Beds made from wooden crates, rubber masks on the walls and haunted artifacts like a black knight’s helmet and diving suit make this room a spooky treasure trove.
–Sleeper Car Bunk Room: Behind a secret entrance, this train-themed bedroom straight out of a murder mystery novel contains bunk beds for six Houseguests (the first time the BB house has had bunk beds since Season 1!) and a sleek Art Deco design.
–Rooftop Garden Kitchen: The kitchen and dining area mimic a rooftop garden with ivy-covered walls, sunset skies and a 10-foot round garden party table under string lights.
–Secretive “Wine Cellar”: A moody, bottle-lined cellar (with no actual wine, sorry Houseguests) is a perfect spot for whispering secrets and plotting moves.
–Victorian Conservatory Lounge: A lush, plant-filled room with a 13-foot green velvet lounge and a plum tree, ideal for quiet strategy sessions.
–Venom Lounge and Poison Bar: Upstairs, snakes slither across the wallpaper in a moody lounge featuring a “Poison Bar,” (don’t worry, there is no actual poison) a velvet daybed and ravens stealing party lights.
–Boxing Ring Gym: The gym includes a full boxing ring, heavy bag and workout gear – great for blowing off steam and staying in top sleuthing shape.
